Charles Edward Andre, 76, veteran Burlington shoe dealer and life resident of this city, died at his home, 621 Maple street, yesterday morning. He had been in ill health for several years.
As a young man Mr. Andre entered the shoe business here with his father, the late P.A. Andre, one of the pioneer business men of this city. Charles E. Andre continued in the shoe business almost continually until 1923, when failing health made it necessary for him to retire.
He was born in Burlington, Jan. 26, 1856, the son of P.A. and Christina Andre. He received his education in private schools, for the most part attending the Goff school here. His marriage to Miss Anna B. Romkey took place in Union Township, June 16, 1886.
Mr. Andre was a member of St. Paul's Methodist church of this city most of his life. When the church merged with other Methodist churches of this city his membership was transferred to Grace Methodist church, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
Surviving are his widow; one son, Dale R. of Burlington; one sister, Lydia Andre of Burlington and one brother, P.H. Andre of La Grange, Ill., and two grandchildren, Ruth and Bette Andre. One daughter, Maude Lillian, died in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3:30 with the Rev. Fred Skewes, pastor of Grace Methodist church, officiating.
