OCCUPATION: Surveyor
Occasionally referred to as "C.W. Switzer" in the Boteourt County records.
Charles Switzer was a surveyor like his grandfather Nathan before him, and served as County Surveyor for Botetourt between 1889 and 1928, following in the footsteps of his father-in-law, Samuel Burger, who held the job until his death in 1889. In the crib barn next to his house where others might have stored food or kept a spinning wheel, Charles Switzer kept his survey office--complete with instruments, maps, and records. He was mostly self-educated; he didn't finish school, but also worked as a teacher as well as a surveyor.
