Named after his uncle, Willie Williams Adams, who was a shipbuilder in Norfolk, Virginia.
There are several possibilities of how my grandparents met, as their social circles overlapped. They both went to the same church, for instance--Jefferson Street Baptist in Roanoke. Granddaddy Adams also dated some of Grandma Adams' friends before they started dating each other. You can read Granddaddy Adams' wedding announcement.
As a young man, Granddady Adams was a grocery clerk for a store in Roanoke called Plymale's, until his father-in-law helped him get on the Roanoke City police force. He started work there on August 1, 1937. He first qualified as a Third Class Radio Telephone Operator (necessary to use the radio system), then was "duly appointed" a patrolman on January 28, 1939. He served on the force for 30 years, and when he died, both active and retired city policemen lined the route from the funeral home to the cemetery and saluted as his funeral procession drove by.
When Jana and I were born, he set up a savings account for each of us--starting with a $50 deposit--for us to someday use for college.
