A James W. Riley appears in the Carvin's Creek area as early as 1826 or 1830, owning 600 acres there. But our first ancestor--John Riley--arrived around 1840. He came to the area from Tinker Creek in Botetourt County; family members believe that before then he lived either in Floyd or Montgomery County. There is evidence that he built a mill and a log dam right at the spot where the Carvin's Cove Dam stands today.
Lived on Tinker Mountain near present-day Roanoke, Virginia. He is buried (alongside several unmarked stones) at the foot of Tinker Mountain, on Dogan Lane. Once overgrown with brush and brambles, the site of the grave (complete with an old iron fence) was recently cleared with a path.
