Served as a captain in the American Revolution, along with his father, Henry Switzer, under one Captain Mills. Surviving Botetourt County records indicate that he was in "District 44" of the militia during the war. Later Nathan would become a constable for Botetourt County, and a surveyor--apparently the first of a long line of Switzers to do so.
Appointed the constable in the company of one Captain May on February 6, 1789.
Nathan owned about 600 acres in the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church area of Botetourt County. To this day members of the Switzer family still own a piece of this original land.
Married by a Presbyterian minister named Edward Crawford.
