Aunt Rose was the second policewoman in Roanoke City--a detective the force teamed with their first policewoman, Hazel Garst (1916-2000) in 1944. Her brother, my grandfather, encouraged her to join the force and talked to the police chief about letting her on. She served on the force from April 1, 1944 until she retired for health reasons on August 8, 1963. During that time she walked several beats, varying by night, ranging from downtown Roanoke to Highland Park in the southwest quarter of the city.
Grew up in a house at 1518 Rorer Avenue in Roanoke.
She met her future husband, Al, when he came to visit her brother Doug after my grandfather had been sick for awhile. Uncle Al and my grandfather were school friends, and when my uncle met my aunt he told my grandfather, "You're pretty, but you can't hold a candle to your sister!"
