MARY VIRGINIA BURGER (SWITZER) (1857-1946)

From the family that developed the Burger Plow in Botetourt County, VA, and owned the Burger and Brothers factory in Richmond, VA, which made arms and rail lines for the Confederacy, along with other miscellaneous war-related items such as scabbards and guidons.

Family lore says that Samuel Burger was a captain in the Confederate army and served as an aide to Jefferson Davis, though I haven't been able to confirm this with any existing records. In addition he was a teacher, farmer, and served as the Botetourt County representative to the Virginia House of Delegates from 1877 to 1879. He also served as the Botetourt Country Surveyor from 1870 until his death in 1889; upon his death that job was filled by his son-in-law, Charles Williams Switzer.

During my sole trip to the National Archives in Washington D.C. to do genealogical research, I ran across a microfilmed, undated scrap of paper from Captain Samuel Burger requisitioning some miscellaneous items for himself.

Buried at the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery (otherwise known as the "White Church Cemetery") on Rt. 666 in Botetourt County, 3 miles northwest of Fincastle.
